the public returned the republicans to the house, the democrats to the senate, and president obama to the white house. they want them to start solving problems. they are absolutely disgusted with this and if they go over this cliff, believe me, there's going to be a price to be paid and nobody's going to be a winner on it. >> yeah, but i do want to add, john, i do believe the president did get a partial mandate, at least the voters said the wealthy in this country ought to pay higher taxes. now, how you get to the higher tax, whether you raise rates, whether you reduce deductions, there are a lot of different ways to get there. the point is, i think everybody now agrees that -- not everybody agrees, but that we need more revenue and that the wealthy ought to be the first ones in line. and that seems to be reasonable, but i think the white house can get too stuck on this whole question of rates as opposed to finding a creative solution that brings in more money. >> david, i agree with you, but you do that through effective tax rates, not through marginal tax rates. that's how you br

at the white house with president obama to discuss, what else? the fiscal cliff. states would be severely impacted because much of their revenue comes from the federal government. cnn white house correspondent dan lothian is at the white house. so, dan, who is trying to convince who? >> well, i think it's a little bit of both here. you have the president trying to sort of put pressure on them, if you will, these governors, to then they in turn should put pressure ontheir lawmakers to get a deal done. at the time the governors are here to let the president know there's some real consequences if this scenario plays out. a third of states out there get their revenue from federal grants according to a pew report, and that report also points out that states like virginia, for example, would be heavily impacted. why virginia? because it has a lot of military defense contractors. they're saying that they could be impacted to the tune of about $10 billion in economic activity falling. in addition to that, 120,000 jobs lost. take a look at a state like south dakota, for example. a very small state

president obama invited the major players to the white house to discuss the situation. as of this morning, no new talks are scheduled. brianna keilar joins us. so many republicans say they are pessimistic about a deal happening in time to avert this fiscal cliff. some say it's for political reasons. what can you tell us? >> it may all be for political reasons. that's no surprise in washington. as you can seen through dealmaking not just on this but things in the past couple of years between the white house and congress, there is almost this rhythm that has evolved. both sides are pointing to the other for an impasse. republicans like senator lindeyy graham just slamming the white house and tim geithner for a plan he laid out on behalf of the administration, laying out about $1.6 trillion in new revenues coupled with only about $400 billion in medicare cuts. listen to what graham said. >> i think we're going over the cliff. it's pretty clear to me they made a political calculation. this offer doesn't remotely deal with entitlement reform in a way to save medicare, medicaid and social secur

. a curious thing happened in the days following barack obama's election. a group of texans filed a petition on a white house website. they wanted texas to secede from the not so united states of america. the movement spread further encompassing each of the 50 states in the union. it's a ridiculous exercise that will go nowhere. there are some real impulses across the atlantic. europe might soon have a new independent state. look at catalonia. a region in northeast spain that includes barcelona. last sunday, they held parliamentary elections. a majority of the winners campaigned on a platform of secession. the vote follows an unprecedented demonstration in september when about one million catalons marched the streets demanding statehood. to put it in perspective, the entire population is only about 7.5 million. the next step could be a public referendum on breaking away. consider scotland which has already reached that point. in october british prime minister david cameron agreed to a deal allowing scotts to vote in 2014 as to whether they want to secede. then there's the strange case of bel

's no official meetings right now between the white house and congressional leaders. of course, there are meetings going on behind the scenes and contacts between the white house and congressional republicans but nothing official. president obama is taking this sort of outside strategy where as we saw him last week he goes outside of washington. he'll be giving remarks to the business roundtable this week, meeting with business leaders tomorrow. other stakeholders this week and he's trying to kind of put some pressure on congress and learn from a mistake that he made you might say during say the debt ceiling negotiations where you saw these meetings with congressional leaders but there really wasn't a whole lot of payoff and didn't make the president look particularly effective. an issue to be resolved is to tackle entitlement reform. you have the white house and republicans saying you need to put meat on the bones and going back and forth. listen to what republican senator bob corker said. >> i think the really discussions around the fiscal cliff haven't even begun to be serio

. on tuesday, president obama is going to have some company. he's going to be meeting with the governors at the white house. he's going to be talking, of course, about money, how to keep our economy growing, and of course hopefully reduce the deficit as well. very busy day there at the white house. on thursday, we have all our eyes on washington. two controversial changes in washington state, same-sex marriage becomes legal on thursday in washington state. we'll also be looking at marijuana. adults over 21 can legally carry up to an ounce of pot, sort of. the federal government still says pot is an illegal drug. that's how they're going to do it in washington on thursday. and on friday, we'll be watching for the jobs report. this is the november jobs report. in october, 171,000 jobs were add a added, you may recall. experts think superstorm sandy could affect this. a lot of people having a hard time getting around, power is out. really put a lot of folks behind. we'll see how that goes. on saturday, a big day for college football fans. heisman trophy winner will be announced. we'll find
